ARNO-TEMPLET COMES UP SHORT AT NCAA SOUTH CENTRAL REGIONAL

NORMAN, Oklahoma (April 12, 2008) – Courtney Arno-Templet represented the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers on Saturday night at the 2008 NCAA South Central Regional held at the Lloyd Noble Center on the campus of the University of Oklahoma.
Arno-Templet, a senior from Coppell, Texas, took part in both the bars and beam competitions as an individual event specialist at the six-team meet.
On bars, Arno-Templet missed on her release move and fell for the first time all year. Her season-low score of 9.250 placed her 39th in the final bars results, well behind the winning mark of 9.900 earned by Kassi Price from the University of Alabama.
“Courtney was in a difficult position tonight,” said TWU head coach Frank Kudlac. “She had to sit for three rotations before she competed on bars. I think that had a little something to do with her making a few uncharacteristic mistakes.”
Arno-Templet shook of her disappointing bars set to score a solid 9.450 on beam, good enough to finish 31st on the event. Two Alabama gymnasts – Brittany Magee and Kassi Price – recorded matching scores of 9.900 to tie for the beam title.
Saturday night’s competition marked the third year in a row that Arno-Templet has participated in the South Central regionals. In 2006, she competed on bars and beam. Last season, she tied for fifth on bars with a score of 9.800.
“Courtney didn’t perform as well as she would have liked tonight, but I’m still extremely proud of her,” said Kudlac. “To qualify for regionals three years in a row is quite an accomplishment. She was the only NCAA Division II gymnast on the floor tonight and she more than held her own against some of the top gymnasts in the country.”
Alabama scored a 197.300 to win the team competition at the regional. The University of Oklahoma placed second with a 195.875. Both the Crimson Tide and the Sooners will advance to compete in the 2008 NCAA National Championships later this month in Athens, Georgia.
Arno-Templet and the rest of the Pioneer gymnastics team will return to action next week when they compete at the 2008 USA Gymnastics Women’s Collegiate National Championships in Shreveport, Louisiana.
“I am, just am I’m sure Courtney is, already looking forward to Nationals,” concluded Kudlac. “It’s going to be the final competition of her TWU career and I know she wants to go out on top.”
