PIONEERS HAVE THEIR SIGHTS SET ON ANOTHER MIC TITLE
DENTON, Texas (March 27) - The TWU Pioneer gymnastics team will be looking to add another award to their already crowded trophy case this Friday night, March 28, when they travel to Shreveport, Louisiana to compete in the 2008 Midwest Independent Conference (MIC) Championships.
TWU is in its sixth season as a member of the MIC. In addition to TWU, the conference includes five NCAA Division I teams - the University of Illinois-Chicago, Illinois State University, Southeast Missouri State University, and the host team of the meet, Centenary College.
The Pioneers won the 2006 MIC Conference Championship (their first in school history) but stumbled to a fourth place finish at the 2007 conference meet. TWU head coach Frank Kudlac believes that last year’s disappointment will be a big motivator for his squad this time around.
“Obviously we didn’t perform like we wanted to at last season’s MIC meet,” said Kudlac. “We came in as the defending champions and, unfortunately, we didn’t hit when it counted. I know that our girls haven’t forgotten that and I expect them be focused and ready to go.”
TWU should have plenty of confidence headed into Friday night’s competition. The Pioneers are 3-1 this season against MIC foes and are ranked second in this week’s GymInfo MIC rankings. TWU has an RQS (Regional Qualifying Score) of 193.370, putting them less than a point behind the top-ranked SEMO Redhawks (194.065). UIC (192.825), ISU (192.420), and Centenary (192.205) round out the rankings behind the Pioneers.
“I like our chances,” explained Kudlac. “We’ve done well all season long versus the MIC and I feel like we are peaking at the right time of year. It’s going to be a close meet, as all five teams are pretty evenly matched, but if we perform like we’re capable, there’s no doubt in my mind that we can win.”
The meet will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Gold Dome on the Centenary campus. Streaming video of the meet will be available online at www.GoCentenary.com .
