PIONEERS WILL START THEIR 2008 SEASON AT THE CANCUN CLASSIC
DENTON, Texas (January 2) - The 2008 Texas Woman’s University gymnastics team will begin their 2008 season this Friday, January 4, in Cancun, Mexico when they compete in the Cancun Classic.
The Cancun Classic is one top early season meets on the collegiate gymnastics schedule. There will be two four-team sessions of college gymnastics at this year’s event. TWU will compete against LSU, Denver University, and the University of Minnesota in the 3:00 p.m. session. The 7:45 p.m. session on Friday night will feature the University of Oklahoma, the University of Iowa, West Virginia University and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
LSU, DU, and Minnesota should provide stiff competition for the Pioneers. LSU and DU were ranked 10th and 15th in the 2008 preseason GymInfo Coaches Poll that came out on Monday, December 17. Minnesota also received votes in that same poll.
“We’re going to be facing three of the top teams in the nation, there’s no question about that,” said TWU head coach Frank Kudlac. “That’s a good thing though, as we’ll be forced to perform at a high level to score well. I know that our girls are excited about the opportunity to start the season against such formidable opposition.”
This last time the Pioneers competed in the Cancun Classic was on January 2, 2004, when they scored a 189.175 to place fourth in a quad meet against Iowa, Oklahoma, and Washington.
The Pioneers returned to the TWU campus on December 28, to finish their preparations for this Friday’s meet.
“We’ve had an excellent week of practice,” Kudlac explained. “Our coaching staff has really pushed the girls in order to be ready, and I feel like they’ve responded exceptionally well. Hopefully we can go to Cancun and start our season on a high note.”
After the Pioneers return from Cancun, they will have two weeks to prepare for their 2008 home opener, scheduled for Saturday, January 19, at 7:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena versus the University of Oklahoma.
