DRAW STRING BAG GIVEAWAY AND YOUTH CLINIC HIGHLIGHT THIS SUNDAY’S TWU QUAD MEET

DENTON, Texas (January 24) - The Texas Woman’s University gymnastics team will look to continue their strong start to the 2008 season this Sunday, January 27, when they host a 2:00 p.m. quad meet at Kitty Magee Arena versus Denver University, the University of Maryland, and the Air Force Academy.

Through two meets this year, the Pioneers are averaging a team score of 191.850. TWU is ranked 32nd in the nation (amongst all college gymnastics teams) in this week’s GymInfo poll. Additionally, the Pioneers are ranked first in this week’s NCAA Division II and USA Gymnastics (USAG) GymInfo polls.

TWU will face stiff competition on Sunday afternoon. Denver University finished 10th at the 2007 NCAA National Championships and is currently ranked 16th in the nation. Maryland is ranked 35th while Air Force is ranked 52nd.

“This meet is going to be a tight one,” said TWU head coach Frank Kudlac. “DU is one of the strongest teams in the country. Maryland and Air Force also boast very talented squads. We’ve performed well to this point in the season, but, we’re going to have to step it up another level if we want to continue our success on Sunday.”

Fans will want to arrive early to the meet as the first 150 spectators through the Magee Arena doors will receive a free “Pioneer Proud” draw string bag. During the meet, Big Al’s Totally Twisted Balloons will be set up in the Magee Arena lobby to entertain children and adults alike. Immediately following the meet, from 4:30-5:45 p.m., the TWU gymnasts and coaches will conduct a free youth gymnastics clinic open to children of all abilities between the ages of 8 and 17. Individuals wishing to participate in this clinic must register at the TWU promotions table on the day of the meet and have a waiver signed by a parent our guardian. The clinic will be limited to the first 48 kids (12 per event) that sign up. All participants will get to work on all four events and receive instruction from the Pioneer gymnasts and coaches.

“This is something new that we’re doing,” said Kudlac of the free youth clinic. “There are a bunch of gymnastics clubs in the Denton area, so hopefully they will come out and take part in this clinic. I know that our TWU gymnasts and coaches are looking forward to the chance to give back to the local gymnastics community.”

For more information about the free youth clinic, or about Sunday’s meet, please contact Coach Kudlac at (940) 898-2384 or by e-mail (fkudlac@twu.edu).
