PIONEER POST from Brisa

Pioneer Post - September 10, 2007

Hello Everyone,

My name is Brisa Fuentes, and I am a senior this year. Many talented and hard working student-athletes were added to the team this year and I’m excited to see the results of the season. I, however, will not be competing this season. As many of you know, I was unable to compete last season due to injury. I had been restricted from doing any sort of gymnastics since re-injuring myself in the fall of 2006. We were all in high hopes that I would be able to come back healthy and able to compete at least one event, but within the first week of practice, the consistent use of my arm was too much to handle. After much discussion between my doctor, trainer, and Coach, it was recognized that there was nothing more I could do to improve the conditions of my injury. It was decided that I end my career for health reasons. It is very difficult to watch the girls in the gym and know that I won’t get to contribute as a gymnast my final year, but I am thankful for the two successful seasons I was given, and am thankful that I can contribute to the team with the new role I will be placed in.

As always, the task of September practice is to build up strength and endurance. There is also much emphasis placed on good form and perfecting the basics. This allows for more focus to be placed on enhancing skills and the level of difficulty in routines. September has never been an easy month, but it is a test of character. I applaud the girls for how well they have been handling these past few weeks in the gym. EVERYONE is giving it their all and this shows strength and determination. Being in a position to observe, I have noticed how well the girls have been encouraging one another. It is great to see team cohesiveness early in the season.

Our team has set high expectations for this season. We have started off great and have the potential to do well this season. One of our goals this year is to build on our team unity, which will help our team succeed in the end.

Stay with us as we continue on our journey toward success!
