ARNO TIES FOR FIFTH ON BARS AT 2007 NCAA SOUTH CENTRAL REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
TUCSON, Arizona (Apr. 14) – Texas Woman’s University senior gymnast Courtney Arno (pictured) recorded a score of 9.800 to finish in a tie for fifth place on the uneven bars at the 2007 NCAA South Central Regional Championship on Saturday night at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona.
Arno, the Pioneers lone competitor at the regional meet, performed what TWU head coach Frank Kudlac called a “flawless” routine.
“That was by far Courtney’s best bar routine of the year. She executed every skill and then stuck her dismount. I couldn’t ask for her to do any better. I expected her to do well and she delivered just as she’s done all season long,” he said.
Stanford’s Tabatha Yim won the bars competition with a score of 9.900. Karin Wurm from the University of Arizona came in second with a 9.875. Arizona State’s Nicole Harris was third with a 9.850 and Cara Pomeroy from the University of Illinois finished fourth with a 9.825. Nicole Cowart, also from the University of Illinois, tied Arno for fifth with a matching 9.800 score.
Kudlac was elated with Arno’s top five finish.
“The South Central region is one of the most difficult in the nation. A fifth place finish is an outstanding result, not only for Courtney, but also for our TWU gymnastics program,” stated Kudlac.
This is the second season in a row that Arno has competed in a regional championship meet. She represented TWU at the 2006 NCAA South Central Regional meet on both bars and beam. Another Pioneer gymnast, junior Brisa Fuentes, competed in floor exercise at the same event.
Stanford captured the regional team title at the meet. The Cardinal totaled a 196.600 to finish in front of Oregon State (196.075), Arizona (196.025), Illinois (194.625), Arizona State (194.375) and Illinois-Chicago (190.925).
Next up for Arno and her TWU teammates will be the 2007 USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships scheduled for April 19-21 in Seattle, Washington at Seattle Pacific University. The Pioneers won the 2006 USAGCNC last spring in Ithaca, New York. Overall, TWU has won eight USAG national titles since 1993.
