PIONEERS POST A 192.000 IN FINAL REGULAR SEASON MEET
FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas (Mar. 23) – The Texas Woman’s University gymnastics team scored a 192.000 in their final meet of their 2007 regular season on Friday night at Barnhill Arena in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The Pioneers team total placed them fourth in the quadrangular meet. The host team, the University of Arkansas, won the meet with a 196.450 team score. The University of Missouri finished second with a 195.725 and Southeast Missouri State came in third with a 192.975.
TWU head coach Frank Kudlac had mixed feelings about his squad’s performance.
“We were good, but not great, tonight. In order for us to have a chance at our conference and national championships, we have to be great. I’m very pleased with the way we responded after last week’s disappointing effort (a 190.525 in Arizona), but at the same time, I know we still need to improve if we want to accomplish our postseason goals,” he said.
The Pioneers opened the meet with a strong performance on beam. Five out of the six TWU beam workers hit their routines, helping the Pioneers to a team beam score of 48.500. Freshman Rachel Zimmerman posted a TWU team-best 9.725 on the event.
Sophomore Amy Hulbert provided the highlight for the Pioneers on their next event, floor exercise. Performing a routine with increased difficulty, Hulbert recorded a TWU-high 9.725 floor score. Hulbert’s efforts, however, were overshadowed by two TWU falls on the event, and the Pioneers could only manage a 47.675 team floor total.
TWU rebounded from their struggles on floor with an outstanding performance on vault. Junior Nicole Poling led the way for the Pioneers on the event with a 9.800 score. Sophomore Brittany Parker, with a 9.750, and senior Catherine Schnoes, with a 9.700, also did their part on vault for TWU.
On their final event of the night, bars, the Pioneers were again hampered by two falls. Senior Courtney Arno, however, showed some resiliency for TWU, stepping up as the team’s bars anchor and nailing a 9.825 routine. Arno’s bars score was the third highest overall for the meet.
Next up for the Pioneers will be the 2007 Midwest Independent Conference Championships on Saturday, March 31, in Chicago, Illinois. TWU enters the meet as the defending conference champions, as they won the 2006 MIC Championship last spring in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
