PIONEERS POST SEASON-BEST SCORE IN DUAL MEET AT SEMO
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Missouri (Feb. 24) – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers posted a season-best 192.500 team score in their dual meet on Saturday night in Cape Girardeau, Missouri against the Southeast Missouri State University Redhawks.
Southeast Missouri , however, answered the Pioneers impressive performance with a strong effort of their own, and the Redhawks claimed the meet victory with a 193.475 team total.
It was the third meet in a row that TWU has put up a season-high team total. On Saturday, February 10, TWU registered a 191.525 in a triangular meet versus Ball State and BYU. Last Saturday, February 17, the Pioneers scored a 192.100 in a quad meet against Boise State, Illinois State and the University of Illinois-Chicago.
TWU began the meet on bars, and senior Courtney Arno hit a 9.825 routine to win the event individually and get the Pioneers off to a strong start. Junior Jennifer Kingsbury, returning from injury after missing the Pioneers first six meets of the season, also had a solid bar score of 9.600.
Next up for TWU was vault. Junior Nicole Poling and sophomore Brittany Parker were the Pioneers top vaulters, as both gymnasts finished with matching 9.750 scores. TWU’s team vault score of 48.300 was nearly three tenths of a point higher than the SEMO team score on vault.
On floor exercise, the Pioneers received another boost from a gymnast returning from injury. Sophomore Tonya Pipkorn (pictured), out of action the last two weeks with a sprained ankle, scored a TWU team-best 9.725 on floor.
Pipkorn also performed well on beam for TWU, posting a meet-best 9.800 score on the Pioneers final event of the night.
TWU head coach Frank Kudlac said that Saturday night’s effort shows that his team is continuing to improve.
“We’re making strides,” said Kudlac. “I was fairly pleased with the way we performed tonight. Our goal was a great meet, and we had just a good meet. There’s still work to be done before the end of the season, but we are definitely on the upswing so that’s a good sign.”
The defeat puts the Pioneers overall record for the season at 7-7. TWU will next compete on Saturday, March 3 when they travel to Norman, Oklahoma to compete against the highly ranked Sooners in a 7 p.m. dual meet.
