PIONEERS TAKE THIRD IN QUAD MEET WITH BOISE STATE, ILLINOIS STATE AND UIC

DENTON, Texas (Feb. 17)The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers registered a team score of 192.100 and finished third to Boise State and Illinois State in a college gymnastics quadrangular meet Saturday night at Magee Arena in Denton.

Boise State posted a team total of 193.975 to win the meet, Illinois State was second with a score of 192.425, TWU grabbed third place, and the University of Illinois-Chicago came in fourth with a 189.400.

The Pioneers team score was a new season-high, eclipsing the 191.525 they totaled in their home tri-meet last Saturday, February 10, against Ball State and BYU.

TWU’s beam team was the prolific point producer on this night for the home squad. Sophomores Brittany Parker (9.800) and Amy Hulbert (9.775), along with freshman Rachel Zimmerman (9.750), freshman Leslie Pladson (9.650), and senior Courtney Arno (9.725), combined to help TWU to a season-high 48.700 team score on the event.

The Pioneers also performed well on vault, earning a 48.250 team vault score. TWU junior Nicole Poling (pictured), performing a new vault for the first time in competition, scored a 9.800 to tie for first (with Boise State’s Shaniece Craft) in the individual vault standings for the meet.

“I was extremely pleased with both our beam work tonight and our performance on vault,” said TWU head coach Frank Kudlac. “Our beam team just continues to improve, and they were easily our top event at this meet. On vault, we had several girls trying new things tonight, specifically Amy Hulbert and Nicole Poling, and I was happy to see their efforts pay off with high scores.”

In addition to their team win, Boise State claimed individual event victories on beam (DeAvera Todd, 9.850) and floor (Yvette Leizorek, 9.825). Illinois-Chicago’s Justine Weyer (9.775) and Annie Kachman (38.750) were the winners on bars and in the all-around.

TWU will return to action next Saturday night, February 24, when they travel to Cape Girardeau, Missouri for a 7 p.m. dual meet against Southeast Missouri State.
