SEASON-HIGH TEAM SCORE CARRIES PIONEERS TO SECOND PLACE FINISH
DENTON, Texas (Feb. 10) – A season-high team score of 191.525 helped the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers gymnastics team to a second place finish in their triangular meet versus the BYU Cougars and the Ball State Cardinals on Saturday night at Magee Arena in Denton.
BYU, the 25 th ranked team in this week’s NCAA GymInfo poll, won the meet with a 194.550 score. TWU came in second, and Ball State finished third with a 188.875 team total.
The Cougars claimed individual and team high score honors on every event. Senior Kacie Capra-Callens was the individual star of the night, as she won on both bars (9.70) and floor (9.90). Junior Alethea Boon posted a 9.95 to win the vault competition and junior Dayna Smart was victorious on balance beam with a 9.850 score.
Freshman Leslie Pladson (pictured) had the top individual score of the night for TWU, posting a 9.725 on beam to finish in a tie for fifth in the event. Sophomore Brittany Parker and junior Nicole Poling had the Pioneers best efforts on vault, as they both scored a 9.650. Sophomore Brista Michael led the TWU squad on bars with a 9.600 score to tie for fourth on the apparatus. Competing on floor for the first time in her career, TWU senior Courtney Arno scored a Pioneer high 9.70 to finish sixth in the event. Beam (48.100) and floor (48.100) were the best team events of the night for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers high team total for the meet was due in large part to the fact that, for the first time this season, they did not count a fall on any event.
“For the first time this season, we put a meet together and hit on all four events,” said TWU head coach Frank Kudlac. “We were consistent the entire night, and we competed like we are capable of competing. I am very proud of the performance of our TWU gymnasts.”
Kudlac went on to say that he was also pleased with the TWU response to what was a challenging week.
“For all intents and purposes, we weren’t able to practice this week. Half of our team was sick, and we are already missing so many girls because of injury. However, the depth of our team shined through and we were still able to come out tonight and earn a high score,” he explained.
The Pioneers will be back in action at home next Saturday night, February 17, when they welcome Boise State, Illinois- Chicago, and Illinois State to Magee Arena for a 7 p.m. quadrangular meet. It will be the Pioneers annual “Think Pink” meet, as a variety of promotional efforts will be geared towards raising money for breast cancer research.
