TWU TURNS IN A STRONG SECOND PLACE PERFORMANCE IN QUAD MEET
DENTON, Texas (Jan. 27) – The Texas Woman’s University gymnastics team continued their pattern of early season improvement on Saturday night, finishing second only to the nationally ranked University of Oklahoma Sooners in a quadrangular meet with Centenary College and George Washington University at Magee Arena.
TWU recorded a final team score of 191.275, slightly behind the Sooners very impressive 195.600 team total. George Washington was in third with a 190.05 final team score and Centenary College came in fourth with a 187.950 team total.
“Our number one goal tonight was to show improvement, which we did,” said TWU head coach Frank Kudlac. “Our team continued to make strides in nearly every event. OU has an incredible program, one of the best in the country, and finishing second to them is in no way a disappointment. I’m very excited with our results this evening.”
The Sooners, ranked eighth in this week’s NCAA poll, turned in a dominant overall performance. In addition to their team victory, OU gymnasts won all of the individual event titles. Junior Kiara Redmond posted a perfect score of 10.0 to win the vault. On bars, senior Brittany Koncak-Schumann turned in a meet best 9.9. Senior Lori Winn was the top gymnast on beam with a 9.875 score. Redmond won again on the floor exercise with a 9.875 score. Redmond also bested Koncak-Schumann, 39.350 to 38.700, to win the all-around competition.
Senior Courtney Arno had the best individual result of the night for the Pioneers. The Coppell, Texas product scored a 9.825 on the uneven bars, good enough for third place on the event. Two TWU sophomores, Brittany Parker and Amy Hulbert, also had top five finishes for the home team. Parker (pictured) tied for fifth on vault with a 9.80 score. Hulbert earned a fourth place on floor exercise with a career-best tying 9.75 effort.
Overall, the Pioneers team event totals were 48.125 on vault, 48.325 on bars, 46.700 on beam, and 48.125 on floor.
An enthusiastic crowd of 987 people turned out for the meet, which featured a live performance by the Denton-based rock and roll group, the Rivers West Band. Kudlac was extremely pleased with the strong attendance.
“It’s great for our team, and for our university, to receive such outstanding support from the Denton community. It means a lot to our program to be competing in front of a packed house,” he said.
The Pioneers will now turn their attention to a triangular meet next Friday, February 2, at 7:00 p.m. in Shreveport, Louisiana against Centenary and Illinois State. TWU will next be in action at home on Saturday, February 10, when they host a 7:00 p.m. tri meet with Ball State and BYU.
