PIONEER POST from Jennifer

Pioneer Post - April 3, 2007

Hello Pioneer Fans,

Welcome back to another week of TWU gymnastics. This past weekend was the Midwest Independent Conference Championships hosted by the University of Illinois Chicago. To help get us prepared for the meet, the coaches had us do several team sets on all of the events. We also had a few days off to rest our bodies so we would be refreshed for the meet.

Unfortunately, we did not perform as well as we had hoped…. placing fourth behind UIC, Illinois State, and Southeast Missouri State with a 191.25. We had a rough start to the meet counting two falls on beam, but we managed to refocus and have our best performance of the year on floor. Nicole Poling, Tonya Pipkorn, and Rachel Zimmerman tied for fifth place and made Second Team All-Conference. Amie Boles placed second with a 9.75 and made First Team All-Conference. Next we moved to the vault and hit all of our vaults! Brittany Parker, Amy Hulbert, and Nicole Poling tied for fifth place and made Second Team All-Conference. Finally we finished the competition on bars counting just one mistake. Courtney Arno scored a 9.85, placed second and made First Team All-Conference.

Although we didn’t compete the way we wanted to, we still didn’t walk away empty handed. Lisa Klein tied for assistant coach of the year and Courtney Arno was named senior athlete of the year! Also TWU had 13 gymnasts qualify for the scholastic all-conference team. This meant that the student-athletes maintained a GPA of 3.25 or higher and competed in at least one meet during the season.

While this weekend wasn’t the ideal situation or outcome for us, we learned several important lessons and we are going to use this experience to work even harder in the gym over the next two weeks to try to win back-to-back USAG Collegiate National Championship titles in Seattle.

Go Pioneers!
