PIONEERS POUND PATRIOTS 93-58
TWU 93, UT-Tyler 58 - Box Score
DENTON, Texas (November 7) – Five Texas Woman’s University players scored in double-figures as the Pioneers rolled to a 93-58 win over the UT-Tyler Patriots in an exhibition game Friday night at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton.
Senior forward Renee Renz (pictured) paced the balanced offensive attack for TWU. The 2007 Lone Star Conference South Division Newcomer of the Year made eight of 11 shots from the field and finished with a game-high 20 points. Junior guards Jessica Durr and Keshia Bolds chipped in for the Pioneers with 14 and 12 points respectively. Two newcomers for TWU – junior forward Megan Hashman and freshman guard Jessica Bell – totaled 11 points apiece.
TWU head coach Beth Jillson was pleased with her team’s offensive productivity.
“I know it was just an exhibition game, but anytime you can score 93 points in 40 minutes of basketball your doing something right,” said Jillson. “I thought the key tonight was our ability to speed up the tempo. Our guards did an excellent job of getting the ball up the court and creating some easy scoring opportunities for our team.”
Renz also led the Pioneers in the game with eight rebounds. Durr grabbed seven boards for TWU. Both players also recorded a game-high four steals.
The Patriots, an NCAA Division III team from the American Southwest Conference (ASC), struggled against the Pioneers’ swarming defense. UT-Tyler committed 18 turnovers in the first half and 29 turnovers total.
“We defended pretty well tonight,” said Jillson. “I thought our kids played hard and did an excellent job of staying aggressive for the entire game.”
The Pioneers will play another exhibition contest next Tuesday, Nov. 11, when they travel across town to meet the North Texas Mean Green at The Super Pit. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Admission to the game will be free but donations will be accepted to the benefit the Denton community Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
