PIONEER BASKETBALL TEAM SIGNS TALENTED TRIO

DENTON, Texas (April 22) – The Texas Woman’s University basketball team signed three high school players to National Letters of Intent during the first week of the spring national signing period.

Jessica Bell, Taylor Daniel, and Mallory Schenk all accepted scholarship offers from TWU head basketball coach Beth Jillson and will join the Pioneers’ program in the fall of 2008.

Bell (pictured at right) is a 5’10” guard from Garland ( Texas) High School. In four years (2004-2008) of varsity competition for the Owls, she averaged 18.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, four blocks, and two steals per game. As a freshman, she was named as the GHS team MVP and picked for the 2005 All-District 10-5A second team. Following her sophomore season, she earned 2006 All-District 10-5A first team honors and was selected as the GHS Offensive Player of the Year. In 2007, as a junior, she repeated on the All-District 10-5A first team and again grabbed the GHS team MVP award. In her recently completed senior season, she was chosen for her third-straight All-District 10-5A first team.

Daniel, 5’4”, is another backcourt player from Martin’s Mill ( Texas) High School. She played four years (2004-2008) of varsity basketball at MMHS and led the Mustangs to the UIL Class 1A Texas State tournament in 2006, 2007, and 2008. In 2006 and 2008, her sophomore and senior seasons, she helped her squad win the state tournament and was named to the All-Tournament team. As a freshman in 2005, she was picked as the District 19-1A Newcomer of the Year. In 2006, she earned the District 19-1A Offensive Co-MVP award. In 2007, as a junior, she played her way onto the Class 1A All-State first team and the Region III first team in addition to repeating as the District 19-1A Offensive Co-MVP. As a senior last season, she was again tabbed for the All-State and All-Region first teams. She also grabbed a spot on the 2007-08 All-East Texas first team and won her first District 19-1A MVP trophy.

Schenk is a 6’2” post player from Windthorst ( Texas) High School. She was a three-year member (2005-2008) of the Trojans varsity basketball team. In 2005-06, her sophomore year, she was picked for the District 9-1A second team. After her junior season, she won the 2007 District 9-1A Offensive MVP trophy and earned a spot on the 2007 TGCA 1A All-State team and the 2007 TABC All-Region II team. Last season, in her senior year, she won the District 9-1A MVP trophy and repeated on both the TGCA 1A All-State and TABC All-Region II teams.

Jillson is understandably excited to add this talented trio of players to her roster.

“The biggest thing about Jessica, Taylor, and Mallory is that they all come from winning programs and they know how to win,” she said. “That should be a huge plus for our team. They are also very skilled individuals who will add a lot of depth to our lineup.”

Bell , Daniel, and Schenk will join Fort Worth Christian guard Casey Pool as true freshmen on the Pioneers’ 2008-09 team. Pool signed with the Pioneers in November 2007.
