RENZ SHINES IN PIONEERS’ LOSS AT ACU
Box Score
ABILENE, Texas (February 9) - Despite a career-high 29 point performance from junior post player Renee Renz, the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers suffered a 64-62 loss to the Abilene Christian University Wildcats on Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum in Abilene.
It was the second brilliant game in a row for Renz (pictured) as she matched her previous career-high of 27 points in a thirteen-point TWU win over Midwestern State on Wednesday night in Denton. The transfer from the University of Arkansas-Little Rock picked up against the Wildcats right where she left off against the Mustangs by scoring 13 points in the first half to help the Pioneers jump out to a 28-21 advantage at halftime.
Renz continued to take it to the Wildcats in the second half, pouring in 16 more points and dominating her one-on-one matchup with Abilene Christian’s star center, junior Audrey Maxwell. Struggling to guard Renz, Maxwell was forced to the Wildcats bench midway through the second half when she was whistled for her fourth foul of the game.
Sophomore guard Jamie Meyer and senior guard Alex Guiton stepped up for the Wildcats in Maxwell’s absence. Meyer scored six points and Guiton added five points in the final eight minutes of the game to help the Wildcats overcome a determined effort by the Pioneers. Meyer’s biggest bucket of the night was a jumper with 1:47 remaining in regulation that broke the seventh and final tie of the game. TWU would pull to within one, 63-62, on a Renz three-point shot with two seconds left, but, following a Guiton free throw, the Pioneers could not get a good look at a potential game-winning or game-tying field goal attempt.
It was the second narrow win of the season for the Wildcats (12-9, 6-2 LSC South) over the Pioneers (8-13, 3-5 LSC South). ACU defeated TWU 63-61 on January 16th in Denton.
Renz also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to record her seventh double-double of the season. Senior forward Savannah Thompson also reached double-figures for the Pioneers with 11 points. Guiton finished as the Wildcats leading scorer with 18 points. Maxwell managed 13 and the Jamie Meyter totaled 12.
The Pioneers will play another Lone Star South Division game on Wednesday, February 13, when they travel to San Angelo, Texas for a 7:00 p.m. contest against the Angelo State University Rambelles.
