RENZ POWERS PIONEERS PAST MUSTANGS 62-49
Box Score
DENTON, Texas (February 6) - Texas Woman’s University junior post player Renee Renz scored 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to record her sixth double-double of the season and lead the Pioneers to a convincing 62-49 Lone Star Conference South Division win over the Midwestern State University Mustangs on Wednesday night at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton.
Renz (pictured) scored 18 of her points in the first half to help the Pioneers jump out to a commanding 35-25 halftime lead. After foul trouble banished her to the bench for the early stages of the second half, Renz returned to the game and chipped in seven big points down the stretch to help the Pioneers hold off the Mustangs.
“Renee was outstanding tonight,” said TWU head coach Beth Jillson. “I felt coming into the game that we could get the ball inside against Midwestern. We made a conscious effort to pound the ball into Renee and she delivered. She posted up hard, and, probably most importantly, when she got opportunities in the lane she was able to finish.”
The big night for Renz equaled her career-best scoring total. On November 11, 2006, she tallied 27 points for the University of Arkansas-Little Rock in a 66-55 Trojans’ win over the Creighton Lady Blue Jays.
Senior Savannah Thompson also enjoyed a productive game for the Pioneers, scoring 14 points and claiming six rebounds. Sophomore guard Keshia Bolds was another stat sheet stuffer for TWU, totaling six points, six rebounds, seven assists and one steal.
“As good as Renz was, it wasn’t just a one-woman show for us,” explained Jillson. “Thompson made some big shots early on and Bolds had an excellent all-around game.”
Senior guard Stacey Staten scored 17 points in the loss for the Mustangs. Senior forward Brittni Morrison also contributed 13 points to the MSU cause.
The win by the Pioneers (8-12, 3-4 LSC South) pulls them into a tie for fifth place in the LSC South standings with the Mustangs (9-11, 3-4 LSC South). With just the top the four teams in the division qualifying for the 2008 LSC Championship tournament, Jillson recognized the significance of tonight’s victory was for her team.
“That was a much-needed win,” she said. “Now we’re right back into the thick of things with seven more divisional games to play. I’m excited to see what this team can do in the final month of the regular season.”
