BRISTER CARRIES #14 WEST TEXAS A&M PAST TWU 74-56

Box Score

CANYON, Texas (February 2) - West Texas A&M University All-American guard Emily Brister scored a game-high 24 points to carry the Lady Buffs to a 74-56 win over the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers on Saturday afternoon in Canyon, Texas.

The win was the 10th in a row for the Lady Buffs (16-3, 6-0 LSC South), the 14th-ranked team in this week’s USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll. It was also their 32nd straight victory in Lone Star Conference play and their 41st consecutive win on their home court at the First United Bank Center.

Brister, a junior from Amarillo, Texas, connected on eight of her 15 field-goal attempts in the game and seven of her nine free throw shots. She also grabbed six steals and dished out three assists despite playing just 26 minutes.

“She’s a heck of a player,” said TWU head coach Beth Jillson of Brister. “We didn’t have an answer for her, on either end of the court. I was very impressed with her versatility. When she had open shots, she knocked them down. When we sent a double-team at her, she was able to make the correct pass to an open teammate. That type of versatility is hard to stop.”

In addition to having difficulties with Brister, the Pioneers (7-12, 2-4 LSC South) also struggled to take care of the ball. TWU committed 24 turnovers in the game (tying their season-high). WTAMU scored just under half of their points (33) off of the Pioneers’ miscues.

“The turnovers really hurt us offensively,” explained Jillson. “We shot the ball pretty well (47% from the field), but we just had too many empty possessions where we didn’t even get a look at the basket. You can’t afford to do that against any team, much less the fourteenth-ranked team in the country.”

Junior post player Renee Renz (pictured) recorded her fifth double-double of the season (22 points, 12 rebounds) in the loss for the Pioneers. Senior forward Savannah Thompson also played well for TWU, totaling 12 points and three rebounds before fouling out late in the contest.

TWU will look to get back on the winning track when they take on the Midwestern State University Lady Mustangs on Wednesday, February 6, at 7:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena.
