PIONEERS KEEP THEIR POSTSEASON HOPES ALIVE WITH A 64-51 WIN AT MSU
Box Score
WICHITA FALLS, Texas (February 27) – A 26-point, 15-rebound performance from junior post player Renee Renz (pictured) pushed the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers to a 64-51 win over the Midwestern State University Mustangs in a Lone Star Conference South Division game on Wednesday night at D. L. Ligon Coliseum in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Not only did the comfortable road victory extend the Pioneers’ season-high winning streak to four straight games, it also kept alive the team’s hopes of earning a berth in the 2008 Lone Star Conference Championship postseason tournament. TWU is now 7-6 in the LSC South (12-14 overall) and alone in fifth place in the divisional standings, one game behind 8-5 Tarleton State. A win over #16 West Texas A&M University in their regular season home finale this Saturday afternoon, coupled with a TSU loss at Angelo State, would pull the Pioneers into a tie with the TexAnns for fourth place in the LSC South and the final spot in the postseason tourney. Because TWU and TSU split their two divisional games this season, the next tiebreaker would be the Pioneers and TexAnns’ record against same division opponents in descending order starting with the highest seeded team. By virtue of their win over WTAMU, the LSC South Division regular season champion, the Pioneers would move on to the tournament.
Nine points from Renz sparked a 17-0 TWU run midway through the second half that broke open what was a close game against the Mustangs. The contest was tied 27-27 at the half and TWU held a mere 34-31 lead with 16:18 to play.
“Renz rose to the occasion for us tonight, just as she has done all season long,” explained Jillson. “She did a tremendous job of getting position in the paint and our guards worked hard to get her the ball. MSU did not have an answer for her down low.”
The double-double for Renz was her third in her last four games played and her tenth of the season.
Sophomore guard Jessica Durr also had a solid game in the victory for TWU with 10 points and four rebounds. Senior forward Savannah Thompson did her part as well for the Pioneers with seven points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
Senior guard Kaylon Hodge led the MSU (10-16, 3-10 LSC South) offense in the loss with a season-high 15 points.
The Pioneers must-win game versus WTAMU will tip-off at 2:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena on Saturday, March 1. Jillson is looking forward to the matchup against the Lady Buffs.
“All you can ask for is an opportunity,” said TWU head coach Beth Jillson. “We’re playing our best basketball of the season right now, and this winning streak has put us in position to possibly play in the conference tournament. We’re going to lay it all on the line against WT and let the chips fall where they may.” |
