PIONEERS ON A ROLL ENTERING THE FINAL WEEK OF THE REGULAR SEASON
DENTON , Texas (February 26) – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers are playing their best basketball when it matters most.
Entering the final week of the 2007-08 regular season, TWU is riding a season-high three game winning streak. Consecutive wins over Tarleton State, Eastern New Mexico, and Texas A&M-Kingsville have raised the Pioneers’ Lone Star Conference South Division record to 6-6 and lifted the team to fifth place in the divisional standings.
TWU, 11-14 overall, will play at Midwestern State (9-16, 3-9 LSC South) on Wednesday night, February 27, before returning home to host the LSC South Division leading #16 West Texas A&M University Lady Buffs (21-4, 11-1 LSC South) on Saturday, March 1, at 2:00 p.m. in their regular season finale. In order to qualify for the 2008 Lone Star Conference Championship tournament (to be played March 5-9 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma), the Pioneers need to win both of their games and hope that Tarleton State (currently fourth in the LSC South with a 7-5 record) loses one of their remaining games versus Eastern New Mexico or at Angelo State. The top four teams in the final regular season standings from each division will qualify for the LSC Championship.
“The only thing we need to be worried about is winning these two ballgames,” said TWU head coach Beth Jillson. “If we can knock off Midwestern and then defeat WT, we’ll at least give ourselves a chance. Right now, our focus is on Wednesday night and trying to beat a very good MSU team.”
Saturday afternoon’s contest at Kitty Magee Arena will be the final home game of their Pioneer career for the three senior members of the TWU team - guard Brandi Crouch, forward Savannah Thompson (pictured), and post Jennifer Schilb. The trio will be honored prior to the game in a brief Senior Day ceremony.
“That should give us a little extra motivation,” said Jillson of the tribute to her seniors. “All three of them - Brandi, Savannah, and Jennifer - have meant a lot to this team and this program and we want to send them off on a high note.”
