TWU TAKES DOWN TAMK 67-54
Box Score
KINGSVILLE, Texas (February 23) – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers claimed their third win a row by defeating the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Javelinas 67-54 on Saturday afternoon at the Steinke Center in Kingsville, Texas.
Junior post player Renee Renz was the top player in the victory for TWU. The Flower Mound, Texas native notched her ninth double of the season by tallying game-highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Keshia Bolds also had a strong game for the Pioneers as she connected on five of her nine shots from the field and all six of her free throw attempts to finish with 18 points.
TWU head coach Beth Jillson was complimentary of both Renz and Bolds following the game.
“Renee really had to work hard to be productive today,” said Jillson. “TAMK played a zone defense 90 percent of the time to try and limit her touches. To her credit, she found other ways score - running the court, pounding the boards, stepping out on the perimeter. She definitely demonstrated her versatility. Bolds did an excellent job of attacking of the dribble and finding seams in their defense. The two of them (Renz and Bolds) were an outstanding one-two offensive punch.”
TWU senior forward Savannah Thompson scored 10 of her 12 points in the game in the first twenty minutes of play to stake the Pioneers to a 35-24 halftime lead. TAMK would fight back in the second half to pull within one point, 44-43, with 10:11 left to play. The Pioneers, however, dashed any hopes of a comeback for the home team by finishing the game with a 23-11 run to salt away the Lone Star Conference South Division win.
“That was important,” said Jillson of the Pioneers’ game-ending surge. “Good teams finish games strong, and that’s exactly what we did tonight.”
Senior forward Lana Toki was the high-scorer in the loss for TAMK (6-19, 2-10 LSC South) with 13 points. Two reserves, senior guard Ali Scott and sophomore center Sandra Maldonado, contributed 11 points apiece to the Javelinas’ cause.
With the win, the Pioneers improve to 11-14 overall and 6-6 in the LSC South. TWU will wrap up their 2007-08 regular season schedule with two games next week - at Midwestern State University on Wednesday, February 27, and home to West Texas A&M University on Saturday, March 1.
