PIONEERS READY FOR THURSDAY NIGHT CLASH WITH ZIAS
DENTON, Texas (February 20) – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers will be looking to win their fourth game in a row on their home court when they host the Eastern New Mexico University Zias at Kitty Magee Arena on Thursday, February 21, at 7:00 p.m.
TWU is coming off perhaps its best performance of the season, a 65-51 victory over Tarleton State on Saturday night, February 16. In that game, the Pioneers trailed by 13 points midway through the first half before storming back for to claim the comfortable win over the TexAnns.
“Our second half against Tarleton was maybe our best 20 minutes of basketball this season,” said TWU head coach Beth Jillson. “We’re going to need to play with the same energy and intensity against the Zias on Thursday night.”
Junior post Renee Renz has been one of the primary reasons for the improved play of the Pioneers. The transfer from the University of Arkansas-Little Rock has recorded a double-double in four of her last five games played and is averaging 25.6 points per game and 11 rebounds per game over that same stretch. Additionally, she has scored in double-figures in 22 of the Pioneers’ 23 games played this season.
Renz is currently leading the Pioneers (9-14, 4-6 LSC South) in the following notable statistical categories: field goals made (151), field goal percentage (.476), free throws made (102), free throws attempted (140), total rebounds (183), blocked shots (19), total points (419), points per game (18.2) and rebounds per game (8.0). She also ranks fourth and fifth respectively amongst all LSC players in points and rebounds per game.
“Renee has been outstanding,” said Jillson. “She has really come into her own over the last two to three weeks. There’s not a player in our conference that is playing as well as she is right now.”
Thursday night’s game will be the second meeting of the season between the Pioneers (9-14, 4-6 LSC South) and the Zias (4-19, 1-9 LSC South). TWU defeated ENMU 71-51 on January 31 in Portales, New Mexico.
Seating at Kitty Magee Arena is by general admission only. Adult tickets for TWU basketball games (ages 17 and up) cost $4.00 while tickets for non-TWU students (ages 7-16) are $3.00 apiece.
