PIONEERS CAN’T OVERCOME SLOW START IN 71-60 LOSS TO ASU
Box Score
SAN ANGELO, Texas (February 13) – The Angelo State University Rambelles raced out to a 22-6 first half lead and never looked back en route to recording a 71-60 Lone Star Conference South Division win over the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers on Wednesday night in San Angelo, Texas.
Senior forward Kandra Lakey fueled the quick start for the Rambelles with eight points in the opening 2:41 of the game. Freshman guard Camille Perkins and junior center Nichelle Parks followed Lakey’s lead with six points apiece before the contest reached the midway point of the first half.
Angelo State ’s large early advantage proved too much for the Pioneers to overcome. Despite settling down and playing much better over the final thirty minutes of the game, the closest TWU would get to ASU on this night was nine points, 63-54, with just 3:17 left in the second half.
“We just dug ourselves too big of a hole,” said TWU head coach Beth Jillson. “When you are playing on the road, it’s important to get off to a good start. We didn’t do that tonight, and it proved to be the difference in the ball game.”
Post player Renee Renz was a bright spot in the loss for TWU (8-14, 3-6 LSC South). The junior from Flower Mound scored a game-high 24 points and pulled down a TWU team-best eight rebounds. Renz has now scored 20 points in eight of the Pioneers’ 22 games this season.
Parks finished with 21 points on nine of eleven shooting to lead the Rambelles in scoring. The transfer from McLennan Community College and the University of Texas-San Antonio also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. Perkins (15), Lakey (12), and sophomore forward Lindsey Leatherman (10) also reached double-figures in the win for ASU (19-5, 6-3 LSC South).
Next up for the Pioneers will be a home game on Saturday, February 16, at 7:00 p.m. versus the Tarleton State University TexAnns. It will be “Think Pink” night at Kitty Magee Arena as a variety of breast cancer awareness activities are planned. Fans coming to the game are encouraged to wear pink and support the fight against breast cancer.
