TWU TOPS TAMK 75-64 FOR FIRST LSC SOUTH DIVISION WIN
Box Score
DENTON, Texas (January 26) - The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers recorded their first Lone Star Conference South Division win of the season by defeating the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Javelinas 75-64 on Saturday afternoon at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton.
Strong shooting was the key to the victory for the Pioneers. TWU made a season-high 51 percent (25-49) of their field goal attempts in the game. The Pioneers also converted a season-high 55.6 percent of their three-point field goal attempts.
“Kingsville plays a zone defense the majority of the time. To beat a zone defense, you have to shoot the ball well. We did that today and came away with a positive result. I was really pleased with our patience on offense, we moved the ball effectively created some quality scoring opportunities,” said TWU head coach Beth Jillson.
TWU sophomore guard Jessica Durr scored a game-high 20 points. Junior post player Renee Renz totaled 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Pioneers while freshman guard Tia Dixon (pictured) chipped in with a career-high 15 points.
“Our balance on offense was exceptional,” said Jillson. “The biggest thing was that our guards - specifically Dixon and (sophomore Keshia) Bolds - made a few jump shots early. That opened things up inside for Renz and Durr to go to work.”
A&M-Kingsville, which never led in the game, was paced offensively by senior forward Lana Toki’s 19 points. Three other Javelina players - sophomore guard Kayla Naylor, sophomore guard Dyana Bullinger, and senior guard Ali Scott - scored 11 points apiece.
The loss drops the Javelinas record to 5-12 overall and 1-3 in LSC South play. With the win, TWU improves to 6-11 on the season and 1-3 in the LSC South.
The Pioneers will hit the road next week for a pair of games, playing at Eastern New Mexico on Thursday, January 31, and at West Texas A&M on Saturday, February 2.
