BIG WEEK AHEAD FOR PIONEER BASKETBALL TEAM
DENTON, Texas (January 22) - The Texas Woman’s University basketball team will play two critical Lone Star Conference South Division games this week on their home court at Kitty Magee Arena.
On Wednesday, January 23, the Pioneers (5-10, 0-2 LSC South) will host the Angelo State University Rambelles (14-3, 1-1 LSC South) in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off. TWU head coach Beth Jillson said the key to the game will be her team’s perimeter defense.
“ASU is the top three-point shooting team in the entire conference,” said Jillson. “They hit 38 percent of their shots from behind the arc. We’re going to need to make sure that we get out on all their shooters and try to chase them off the three-point line. We can’t let them find their range early on in the game.”
There will plenty of festivities surrounding Wednesday night’s contest. Beginning at 6:15 p.m., free CiCi’s Pizza will be given away to all fans while supplies last. It will also be TWU Student Organization night, as members of TWU Student Organizations are invited to wear their Student Org t-shirts and come to the game. The Student Org with the most members in attendance will win free TWU basketball t-shirts and the TWU Spirit Stick (presented by the TWU SGA). Additionally, TWU Athletics prizes will be given away at every media timeout throughout the game. Fans are also asked to bring new or gently used stuffed animals to contribute to the TWU Softball H.U.G. Challenge. Prior to the game, invited TWU faculty and staff guests will be introduced with the TWU players as part the TWU basketball Faculty/Staff Appreciation effort. Immediately following the game, the TWU basketball players and coaches will be signing autographs.
On Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., January 26, TWU will take on Texas A&M University-Kingsville. TAMK is just 5-10 on the season, but the Javelinas do have a South Division win over Eastern New Mexico University.
“Kingsville has an athletic team that will get after you. We (TWU) have won seven games in a row over them (dating back to January 29, 2004), so there’s no doubt in my mind that they will be ready to get after us on Saturday,” said Jillson.
