TWU LOSES 56-53 AT TARLETON STATE
Box Score
STEPHENVILLE, Texas (January 19) - A furious second half comeback came up just short for the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers on Saturday night as they lost 56-53 to the Tarleton State University TexAnns in a Lone Star Conference South Division game played a Wisdom Gym in Stephenville, Texas.
The Pioneers appeared to be down and out in this game, trailing by ten points, 39-29, with 13:43 left in the second half. TWU however, refused to fold, and they outscored the TexAnns 21-9 over the next 12:08 to pull to within two, 52-50, with 1:05 remaining on the clock. TSU answered the Pioneers’ push with four quick points of their own to rebuild their advantage to six, 56-50, with only 19 seconds to play. TWU responded again, and after a Savannah Thompson three-pointer and a pair of missed free throws by TSU sophomore guard Brittnie Haley, the Pioneers had the ball back, down by three, with three ticks of the clock left. Unfortunately, pictured freshman guard Tia Dixon’s three-point shot at the buzzer was off the mark, leaving the Pioneers with another close loss.
“We never quit,” said TWU head coach Beth Jillson. “It would have been easy for us to pack up our tents when we were down ten in the second half on the road against a very good Tarleton team. But, our kids dug down deep and battled their way back into the game. We almost pulled it out, and I’m proud of my team for that.”
The majority of the credit for the Pioneers’ late game rally went to junior post Renee Renz. TWU’s top frontcourt player scored 17 points and pulled down a game (and TWU season) high 16 rebounds. The double-double for Renz was her fourth of the season. Sophomore post Chelsea Cook also tallied double-figure points (13) for the second game in a row for the Pioneers (5-10, 0-2 LSC South).
Haley was the high-scorer in the win for the TexAnns (11-4, 2-0 LSC South), notching 19 points, just one shy of her TSU career-high.
The Pioneers will try to get back on the winning track next Wednesday, January 23, when they host another LSC South foe, Angelo State University, at 7:00 p.m. on their home court at Kitty Magee Arena. It will be Pioneer Pride and Pizza Night as free CiCi’s Pizza will be given away to all fans while supplies last. It will also be TWU Student Organization Night, as TWU Athletics prizes will be given away throughout the game to TWU Student Organization members in attendance.
