UCO CRUISES PAST TWU 80-61
Box Score
EDMOND, Oklahoma (January 10) - Balanced scoring and stingy team defense enabled the UCO Bronchos to defeat the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers 80-61 in a Lone Star Conference crossover game Thursday night in Edmond, Oklahoma.
Two players - junior forward Lizzie Brenner and senior guard Antonia Smith - paced the UCO offensive attack with 19 points apiece. Brenner, an All-LSC North Division selection last season, made eight of her nine field goal attempts in the game. Smith, a reserve who had played in just four games to this point in the season, hit all seven of her shots, including three from behind the arc. Senior guard Cassidy Pillow complimented the outstanding play of Brenner and Smith with 18 points of her own.
The Bronchos were just as effective on the defensive end of the court as they were in putting the ball in the basket. UCO allowed TWU to make just 19 field goals in the game, a season-low for the Pioneers. The Bronchos also forced the Pioneers to shoot a season-worst 31.1% from the field.
“When you give up 80 points on defense and shoot that poorly from the field your chances of winning are obviously pretty slim. Give them (UCO) all the credit tonight, they outplayed us in pretty much every facet of the game,” said TWU head coach Beth Jillson.
Junior post player Renee Renz scored 21 points (13 of them from the free throw line) in the loss for the Pioneers. Renz also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. The double-double was the third of the season for the Pioneers’ top frontcourt player. Junior post Amanda Day had her second strong game in a row for TWU, scoring 10 points and grabbing a pair of rebounds in just 13 minutes of play.
The comfortable victory by the Bronchos was their twelfth straight over TWU. The Pioneers have not defeated UCO since February 25, 1996 when they won 77-69 in Edmond.
The loss was the Pioneers fifth in their last six games played and drops their overall season record to 4-8. The win for UCO was their fourth in a row and improves their record to 11-3 on the season.
TWU will look to bounce back from this defeat on Saturday, January 12, when they play another LSC North Division opponent, the Northeastern State University Riverhawks, at 2:00 p.m. in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. |
