PIONEERS FALL TO SWOSU 74-60

Box Score

WEATHERFORD, Oklahoma (December 8) - Southwestern Oklahoma State University freshman center Lucy Ramon scored 15 of her game-high 23 points in the second half to lead Bulldogs to a 74-60 win over the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers on Saturday afternoon in Weatherford, Oklahoma.

Ramon’s offensive efforts enabled the Bulldogs to hold off a gritty Pioneer team that was playing its third road game in the last five days.

Down 33-27 at halftime, TWU outscored SWOSU 11-5 in the first four and a half minutes of the second half to tie the game at 38. SWOSU answered the Pioneers’ push with a 21-9 run of their own to pull back in front by a 59-47 score. Ramon, with five points, and junior guard Tobey Beer, with six points, were the catalysts in the Bulldogs’ surge.

TWU was unable to regain the momentum after the SWOSU scoring outburst. Despite a persistent effort, the Pioneers could not get any closer than six points in the final five minutes of the game.

“We just dug ourselves too big of a hole,” said TWU head coach Beth Jillson. “We were playing from behind the entire game, and unfortunately, we just couldn’t get over the hump.”

The decisive stat in the contest was points in the paint. SWOSU outscored TWU 30-10 in the lane area.

“Our interior defense wasn’t our strength today,” explained Jillson. “SWOSU was able to get to the basket, or get to the foul line, way too easily.”

With 15 points, junior post Renee Renz was the high-scorer in the loss for TWU. Senior forward Savannah Thompson and sophomore guard Jessica Durr tallied 13 points apiece for the Pioneers (3-4).

The aforementioned Beer contributed 16 points to SWOSU scoring total. Junior guard Allie Burdan and sophomore forward Jenna Sprague had nine and eight points respectively for the Bulldogs (5-3).

The Pioneers next game will also be away from home against a formidable opponent. On Saturday, December 15, TWU will face the University of Wyoming Lady Cowgirls in Casper, Wyoming. The Cowgirls are currently ranked 22 nd in the USA Today/ESPN Women’s Top 25 Coaches Poll.
