SECOND HALF SURGE SENDS PIONEERS PAST AGGIES
Box Score
LAWTON , Oklahoma (Dec. 6) – A 19-0 run midway through the second half helped the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers to a 77-59 win over the Cameron University Aggies on Thursday night in Lawton, Oklahoma.
TWU led CU 50-44 with 13:04 left to play in the game when junior post Renee Renz converted two free throws to start the Pioneers’ decisive surge. Senior guard Brandi Crouch then stepped up for TWU, tallying the game’s next nine points by hitting three consecutive three-point baskets. The Pioneers would continue to pour it on, as two baskets by senior forward Savannah Thompson, a short jump shot from sophomore guard Keshia Bolds, and a pair of free throws from sophomore post Chelsea Cook stretched the TWU advantage to 69-44 with 7:40 showing on the clock. Cameron could not respond, and the Pioneers cruised to the comfortable road win.
“I thought that run we made really took the wind out of Cameron’s sails,” said TWU head coach Beth Jillson. “They (Cameron) had fought hard to get back to within six, but, we responded like good teams do. Brandi made three big shots, and the rest of the team kind of rallied around her. I was pleased to see us play so well in the second half.”
Thompson led all Pioneer scorers in the game with 20 points. With 19 points, Renz extended her double-figures scoring streak to six straight games. Crouch finished with 14 points while sophomore guard Jessica Durr contributed 12 points for TWU. Thompson was also the Pioneers leading rebounder as she grabbed eight caroms, five of them off the offensive glass.
Junior guard Jasmine Parr paced the Aggies’ (1-6) offense in the loss with 18 points. Two other Cameron players - junior forward Keindra Scott and senior guard Tiffany Williams - scored 11 points apiece.
The Pioneers (3-3) have now won two games in a row and three out of their last four. TWU will look to continue their strong play this Saturday, December 8, when they travel to Weatherford, Oklahoma for a 2:00 p.m. game against Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
