THOMPSON IS TERRIFIC IN 71-66 TWU WIN OVER SAU
Box Score
MAGNOLIA, Arkansas (December 28) - Texas Woman’s University senior forward Savannah Thompson scored a career-high 23 points to carry the Pioneers to a 71-66 win over the Southern Arkansas University Lady Muleriders on Friday evening in Magnolia, Arkansas.
Thompson (pictured), who hails from Dallas, Texas, found the bottom of the net on 10 of her 15 field goal attempts. She also converted one of the two three-point shots she attempted and two of her three free throw chances.
13 of Thompson’s points came in the first half, as she helped the Pioneers build a 40-27 halftime lead.
The Lady Muleriders, however, fought their way back into the game in the second half, and after a pair of free throws from SAU sophomore guard Goldie White, the score was tied at 63 with 2:57 left in regulation.
The Pioneers responded to the SAU rally in impressive fashion. On their next possession, sophomore guard Jessica Durr put back an offensive rebound to give TWU a 65-63 lead. After SAU was unable to answer, TWU senior guard Brandi Crouch scored on a driving layup to extend the Pioneers’ advantage to 67-63. White brought SAU to within one, 67-66, when she drained a three-point shot with 16 seconds left to play. That was as close as the home team would get, as Durr and Crouch made two free throws apiece in the game’s final seconds to set the final score.
Durr nearly matched Thompson’s scoring output in the game as she finished with 21 points. Junior post player Renee Renz added 11 points for the Pioneers while Crouch and sophomore post Chelsea Cook chipped in with six points apiece. Thompson also led TWU with 9 rebounds. Crouch dished out a TWU season-best (and a personal career-high) 11 assists.
White paced the SAU offensive attack with 20 points. Sophomore center Kayla Jones (16 points) and junior guard Shanaye Davis (14 points) also played well in the loss for the Lady Muleriders.
TWU head coach Beth Jillson was understandably pleased after the game.
“Savannah (Thompson) set the tone for us on both ends of the court. Her aggressiveness on both offense and defense was one of the main reasons we were able to win tonight. I also have to give a lot of credit to both Jessica (Durr) and Brandi (Crouch). When SAU got back into the game, they both stepped up and made key plays for us down the stretch,” she said.
With the win, their second of the year over SAU, TWU snapped a three-game losing streak and improves their season record to 4-6. The loss sets SAU’s record at 4-8.
The Pioneers will be back in action on Wednesday, January 2, 2008, when they host Texas A&M University-Commerce at 7:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena.
