CAREER-HIGH FROM GOLDWIRE CARRIES ECU PAST TWU 74-60
Box Score
DENTON, Texas (December 20) - East Central University guard Lacey Goldwire scored a career-high 37 points to lead the Lady Tigers to a 74-60 win over the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers on Thursday afternoon at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton.
Goldwire, a senior from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, connected on 12 of her 18 shots from the field and 12 of her 13 free throw attempts. She scored 20 points in the first half and 17 points in the second half. Time and time again she used her quickness to get to the basket and either shoot a layup or draw a foul.
“We obviously had no answer for her,” said TWU head coach Beth Jillson. “When we pressured her, she drove to the basket. When we cut off her penetration, she shot over us. Give her a ton of credit, she’s a heck of a player.”
While Goldwire was leading a potent ECU offensive attack, TWU struggled to the put the ball in the basket. For the game, the Pioneers shot a season-low 34.9 percent from the field. TWU also could not find their mark from behind the arc as they converted just one of their 17 three-point attempts (a season worst 5.9 percent).
“I thought we had some good looks,” said Jillson. “But, we just couldn’t knock them down. We had a few opportunities, especially in the second half, to get back in the game, but, unfortunately, we never hit the big shot to give us a little momentum.”
Junior post player Renee Renz was the high-scorer in the loss for TWU. She totaled 21 points, 16 in the second half. A transfer from the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, Renz has scored in double-figures in all nine of the Pioneers’ games this season. Senior forward Savannah Thompson and sophomore guard Jessica Durr contributed 11 and nine points respectively for the Pioneers.
The loss was the third in a row for the Pioneers (3-6). With the win, ECU improves to 7-2 on the year.
After an extended break for the Christmas holiday, TWU will return to the court on Friday, December 28, when they play Southern Arkansas University at 5:30 p.m. in Magnolia, Arkansas.
