BALANCED ATTACK LEADS SOSU PAST TWU 79-73

Box Score

DENTON, Texas (November 29) - Four Southeastern Oklahoma State University players scored in double-figures to lead the Savage Storm to a 79-73 win over the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers on Thursday night at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton.

Senior guard Jessica Hocker paced the balanced attack for SOSU with 20 points. Sophomore guard Kacey Russell (15 points), sophomore forward Destiny Brown (14 points), and junior guard Ashley Tucker (11 points) were the other three players to score in double-digits for the Savage Storm.

TWU head coach Beth Jillson said her team’s poor defense played a major part in the Savage Storm’s offensive success.

“We just didn’t get the job done on the defensive end of the court,” stated Jillson. “They killed us with both dribble penetration and on the fastbreak. We never stopped them, whether it was in half court or in transition. We gave up way too many easy baskets tonight.”

SOSU shot 46.3 percent (25-54) from the field and 50 percent (6-12) from three-point range. The Pioneers, conversely, connected on just 40.9 percent (27-66) of their two-point shots and 20 percent (4-20) of their three-point attempts.

Sophomore guard Jessica Durr scored a game (and career) high 30 points in the loss for the Pioneers. Durr (pictured at left) also pulled down nine rebounds, dished out four assists, blocked one shot, and tallied three steals. Junior post Renee Renz posted her first double-double of the year for TWU with 19 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Senior forward Savannah Thompson also added 10 points to the Pioneers’ cause.

The win by the Savage Storm (4-1) was their fourth in a row. The loss was the third in four games for the Pioneers (1-3) this season.

The Pioneers will begin a stretch of four consecutive road games next Tuesday, December 4, when they travel to Arkadelphia, Arkansas to play Henderson State University.
