RENZ LEADS PIONEERS TO 75-58 WIN OVER SAU
Box Score
DENTON, Texas (November 20) - Junior forward Renee Renz scored 25 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers to a 75-58 win over the Southern Arkansas University Lady Muleriders on Tuesday night at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton.
Renz (pictured), who is in her first season with the Pioneers after transferring from the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, was dominant in all facets of the game. She made 10 of her 19 field goal attempts, one three-point shot, and four of her five free throws. Additionally, she dished out three assists, blocked one shot, and swiped two steals. Her all-around effort was the difference in the game, said TWU head coach Beth Jillson.
“Renee is such a dynamic player,” stated Jillson. “When she is active and aggressive, there’s not a lot of teams that will be able to handle her. She really delivered on both ends of the court for us tonight.”
Senior forward Savannah Thompson was another standout in the win for the Pioneers. The Dallas, Texas native recorded the first double-double of her TWU career by scoring 15 points and pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds (seven of them on the offensive end). Senior guard Brandi Crouch and sophomore post Chelsea Cook also chipped in offensively for TWU with nine points apiece.
Sophomore guard Goldie White, with 17 points, was the top scorer in the loss for SAU. Freshman forward Calisha Kirk and junior guard Shanaye Davis contributed 14 and 12 points respectively for the Lady Muleriders (1-2).
The win was the first of the season for the Pioneers (1-2). It was also the first win as a collegiate head coach for Jillson. A former Charleston Southern University assistant, Jillson took charge of the Pioneers’ program in early August of this year.
“I’m excited to get my first win as a head coach,” she said. “But I’m even happier to see my team get their first win of the season. We’ve been working hard for last three months, and it was nice to see them get rewarded with a victory.”
The Pioneers will now enjoy an extended break over the Thanksgiving holiday. TWU will return to action next Thursday, November 29, with a home game versus Southeastern Oklahoma State University at 7:00 p.m.
