PIONEERS PLAY WELL IN EXHIBITION LOSS AT UTA
Box Score
ARLINGTON, Texas (November 1) - The Texas Woman’s University Pioneer basketball team suffered a 75-68 loss to the UT-Arlington Mavericks in an exhibition game played Thursday night at Texas Hall in Arlington.
TWU freshman guard Jessica Hanna (pictured) led all scorers in the game with 22 points. Hanna, a product of China Springs, Texas, collected the majority of her points from behind the arc as she connected on four of the seven three point shots she attempted. Sophomore Jessica Durr, the Pioneers’ top returning player, chipped in with 15 points. Senior forward Savannah Thompson contributed 11 points and while junior post Renee Renze added 10.
First-year TWU head coach Beth Jillson was extremely pleased with her team’s play against the Mavericks.
“I can’t say enough good things about the way we played,” said Jillson. “UTA is a tough Division I team, and we were right there the whole game. My kids played hard, and everybody that I put out there really stepped up for us. This effort tonight should give us a great deal of confidence as we get ready to start our season.”
UTA, a team that posted a 24-9 record and played in the NCAA Division I National Tournament last year, was paced offensively by junior forward Candice Champion’s 19 points. Senior center Tiffany Riles, with 16 points and a game-high six rebounds, also played well for the Mavericks.
The Pioneers will play one more exhibition game, on Saturday, November 10, versus the Oklahoma Flyers at 2:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena on the TWU campus.
