#3 EMPORIA STATE DEFEATS TWU 83-67
Box Score
EMPORIA Kansas (November 17) - A 13-0 run in the final 4:36 of the first half sparked the Emporia State University Lady Hornets to a 83-67 win over the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers on Saturday night at the Candlewood Suites/Mix 104.9 FM Classic in Emporia, Kansas.
Thanks to the 12 first half points from senior forward Savannah Thompson, the Pioneers stayed within striking distance of the Lady Hornets in the opening stages of the game. Unfortunately for TWU, freshman guard Jessica Hanna and sophomore post Chelsea Cook suffered injuries within minutes of each other and had to leave the court. ESU, who came into the game ranked #3 in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Division II Preseason Coaches Poll, took advantage of the depleted TWU lineup to make their decisive run.
“That was the difference right there,” said TWU head coach Beth Jillson. “Losing Chelsea and Jessica really hurt us on defense. They started to pound the ball inside, got a few easy buckets, and kind of pulled away from us a little bit.”
ESU senior forward Michelle Stueve led all scorers in the game with 24 points. Stueve also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Three other Lady Hornets – junior forward Allie Renberg (19 points), sophomore guard Cassondra Boston (16 points), and junior guard Andrea Leiker (11 points) – also scored in double-digits for ESU.
Thompson, who was named to the All-Tournament team, finished the game with a TWU team-high 18 points. Junior forward Renee Renz and sophomore guard Jessica Durr contributed 13 and 11 points respectively for the Pioneers. Renz and Durr also grabbed six rebounds apiece.
With the win, ESU improved to 2-0 on the young season. The loss dropped the Pioneers record to 0-2.
The Pioneers will now turn their attention to their 2007-08 home opener, scheduled for Tuesday, November 20, at 6:00 p.m. versus Southern Arkansas University.
