BRISTER'S BIG NIGHT LEADS #10 WTAMU PAST TWU 62-51
DENTON, Texas (Feb. 3) – West Texas A&M University sophomore guard Emily Brister poured in 31 points to lead the tenth-ranked Lady Buffs to a 62-51 win over the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers in a Saturday night Lone Star Conference South Division game at Magee Arena in Denton.
Brister, who began the night averaging a LSC best 21.3 points per game, scored 16 points in the first half and 15 in the second to eclipse the thirty point mark for the second time this season. The Amarillo, Texas native did most of her damage from the free throw line, hitting 19 of her 23 attempts from the charity stripe.
TWU head coach Rene Hanebutt raved about Brister’s performance after the game.
“Brister is easily the best perimeter player in the Lone Star Conference. We did an admirable job on her defensively, but she still proved to be the difference in the game. She moves so well without the ball in her hands that it’s very difficult to contain her. I thought she earned every point she scored, and that’s a credit to her ability as a player,” said Hanebutt.
Despite Brister’s brilliance, the Pioneers managed to stay close to the Lady Buffs until the final minutes of the game. TWU trailed 35-20 at halftime, but thanks to a persistent effort, the Pioneers closed to within nine, 48-39, with eight minutes left in regulation.
WTAMU, however, answered the Pioneers push with a 12-7 run over the next seven minutes to salt away their sixth win in a row and stay undefeated, 8-0, in LSC South play. Overall, the Lady Buffs record now stands at 19-3.
Freshman post Chelsea Cook (pictured) and freshman guard Jessica Durr each scored 12 points in the game for the Pioneers. Senior post Margaret Wimbish chipped in with 9 points and a game-high 10 rebounds in the losing effort for TWU.
Hanebutt remained positive about her team’s play despite the loss.
“I couldn’t be any prouder of this team,” she said. “My kids believed they could win and played to win the entire night. We didn’t shoot the ball well again, but we competed defensively. I’m still excited about the potential of this team because these kids are starting to realize how good they can be.”
TWU will now turn their attention to a pair of road games next week. On Thursday, February 8, the Pioneers will play in Portales, New Mexico at 8:00 p.m. against Eastern New Mexico University. On Saturday, February 10, TWU has a 7:00 p.m. rematch in Canyon, Texas against WTAMU.
