DURR NAMED LSC FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Wimbish selected to 2nd Team All-Lone Star Conference
DENTON, Texas (Feb. 27) – Two Texas Woman’s University basketball players - freshman guard Jessica Durr and senior post Margaret Wimbish - were recognized on Tuesday with 2007 Lone Star Conference All-Conference Awards.
Durr (pictured-right), a freshman from Plano, Texas, was chosen as the 2007 LSC South Division Freshman of the Year and received honorable mention on the LSC South Division All-Conference Team. A 5’7” product of Plano Senior High School, Durr played in 21 games, starting 19. She led TWU in steals with 43, and was second on the team in both points per game (9.5) and rebounds per game (5.6). Her 43 assists and 117 rebounds were the third-most for the Pioneers. Durr began her TWU career with a bang, scoring a season-high 18 points in the Pioneers’ season-opening 70-52 win at St. Edward’s on November 17, 2006. Her strong offensive start was a sign of things to come, as Durr would go on to record double-digit points in 10 more games for TWU over the course of the 2006-07 season.
Durr is the first TWU player to win the conference’s Freshman of the Year award outright. Two former Pioneers, Kim Woolridge (1994-95) and Alishia Robinson (1989-90), were elected LSC Co-Freshman of the Year.
Wimbish (pictured-left), a senior from Corpus Christi, Texas was selected for the 2007 LSC South Division All-Conference second team. This is the second year in a row that Wimbish has earned LSC All-Conference distinction. In 2005-06, she was voted to the LSC All-Conference first team and the 2006 LSC All-Tournament team after an outstanding junior season for TWU.
Wimbish led TWU in several statistical categories this season, including points per game (14.6), rebounds per game (7.9), offensive rebounds (72), defensive rebounds (141), blocked shots (18), and field goal percentage (.477). She scored a season-high 33 points against Henderson State University on December 4, 2006, and recorded eight double-doubles. Wimbish was also the only TWU player this season to be chosen as an LSC South Division Player of the Week, earning the award for her efforts during the week of November 20-26, 2006.
TWU head coach Rene Hanebutt said that the LSC honors for Durr and Wimbish are well deserved.
“Both Jessica and Marge had outstanding seasons. I’m very pleased for both of them,” she explained. “This (the awards) also speaks well about the direction that our program is headed in. Hopefully, our other players will be motivated to work hard and earn similar honors in the future.”
A total of 39 student-athletes were recognized by the all-conference program, including at least one member from each of the 15 LSC women’s basketball teams. The awards are voted upon by the league coaches.
TWU closed out its 2006-07 basketball season this past Saturday, February 24, with a 60-53 loss to the Angelo State Rambelles. The Pioneers finished the year with a record of 11-16 overall and 5-9 mark in Lone Star Conference South Division play.
