PIONEERS LOSE 60-53 TO ASU IN SEASON FINALE
DENTON, Texas (Feb. 24) – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers closed out their 2006-07 season on Saturday night with a 60-53 loss to the Angelo State University Rambelles at Magee Arena in Denton, Texas.
The first half of the game was a sloppy affair, as both TWU and ASU had 12 turnovers apiece. The Rambelles, however, managed to take a 28-22 lead into the locker room at halftime, thanks mainly to the fact that they connected on four of the five three-point shots they attempted in the half.
ASU began the second half with a 9-2 run, and extended their lead to 13 points, 37-24, with just over 15 minutes to play in the game.
After a timeout and a switch to full court pressure defense, the Pioneers responded to the Rambelles push. A trio of made three-point baskets by TWU (one each from junior forward Savannah Thompson, junior forward Jennifer Schilb, and freshman guard Keshia Bolds) sparked an 11-2 surge by the home team that cut the ASU lead to four points, 39-35 at the midway point of the second half.
ASU would regroup, and after a three-point play by senior guard Britnee Davis, the Rambelles lead was again seven, 44-37, with 7:32 showing on the clock.
TWU would continue to chip away at the ASU advantage, and a three-point shot by senior post Margaret Wimbish pulled the Pioneers to within five points, 56-51, with 47 seconds remaining in regulation.
With time winding down in the ballgame, TWU was forced to foul in an attempt to continue their rally. Davis and junior forward Kandra Lakey stepped up for the Rambelles and knocked down two free throws apiece to keep the Pioneers at bay and set the final score at 60-53.
Although disappointed by the loss, TWU head coach Rene Hanebutt was pleased by her team’s effort in the second half.
“My kids came back hard in the second half. The defensive press we used kind of helped speed the tempo of the game up a little bit and that worked to our advantage. We made up some ground, but, unfortunately, we just couldn’t make enough plays down the stretch to finish the job and get a win,” said Hanebutt.
Three players – Davis (10), senior forward Meghann LeJeune (16), and senior guard Ashley King (13) – reached double-digit point totals in the win for the Rambelles.
Wimbish and Bolds totaled 12 points apiece to lead the TWU offense in the game.
Saturday night’s contest was not only the final game of the Pioneers 2006-07 season, it was also the final game of the Pioneer careers for a trio of TWU seniors – forwards Kelley Humphries (pictured) and Lindsey McCutcheon and post Margaret Wimbish.
Hanebutt reflected after the game on the contributions of her senior leaders.
“I can’t say enough good things about our senior class. Kelley, Lindsey, and Marge all worked so hard and gave so much to this basketball program. I’m proud to have coached all three of them and they will be greatly missed next season,” she said.
The home court defeat puts the Pioneers final season record at 11-16 and 5-9 in the Lone Star Conference South Division. With the win, Angelo State improves to 16-10 for the year and 8-6 in the Lone Star Conference South Division. Angelo State has also qualified for the eight-team 2007 Lone Star Conference postseason tournament which is slated to begin on Tuesday, February 27.
