TARLETON STATE TOPS TWU 63-55
STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Feb. 17) – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers suffered a Lone Star Conference South Division road loss on Saturday night, losing 63-55 to the Tarleton State TexAnns in Stephenville, Texas.
The turning point in the game was a 12-2 TexAnns run in the final 4:35 of the first half. The strong surge allowed TSU to take a 12 point lead, 31-19, into the locker room at the break.
TWU would try to rally in the second half, pulling to within six points, 42-36, with just over nine minutes to play in regulation. Tarleton, however, responded to the TWU effort with an 8-2 push of their own to regain control of the game.
Junior guard Olivia Pyburn and freshman center JoAnne Jones scored 12 points apiece to pace the TexAnns offense in the victory. Two other TSU players – freshman forward Brittnie Haley and sophomore guard D’Anna Dingler – added nine points each to the TexAnns cause.
Senior post Margaret Wimbish (pictured) totaled a game-high 15 points in the loss for TWU. Freshman guard Jessica Durr added 8 points for the Pioneers and junior forward Savannah Thompson chipped in with 7.
The defeat drops the Pioneers record to 11-14 on the season and 5-7 in LSC South play. TWU is now tied for fifth place in the conference with Midwestern State University.
With the win, Tarleton State improves to 16-7 for the year and 8-4 in LSC South play.
TWU will be back in action next Tuesday, February 20, when they travel to Abilene for a 7 p.m. road game against Abilene Christian University.
