TWU TOPS MIDWESTERN STATE 62-51
DENTON, Texas (Feb. 14) – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers picked up an important Lone Star Conference South Division win on Wednesday night, defeating the Midwestern State University Mustangs 62-51 at Magee Arena in Denton.
The Pioneers victory, coupled with Angelo State’s 67-54 loss to West Texas A&M, pulls TWU into a fourth place tie with ASU in the LSC South. Both the Pioneers and Rambelles now have a 5-6 conference record with three conference games left to play. The top four teams from each of the conference’s two divisions (North and South) will qualify for the 2007 Lone Star Conference Tournament.
TWU jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game and never trailed against the Mustangs. The Pioneers led by nine, 33-24, at the half. A brief surge to start the second half by the Mustangs cut the Pioneers margin to three, 35-32. TWU would answer, however, going on an 11-2 run of their own to extend their lead to twelve and put the game out of reach.
Three players - freshman guard Jessica Durr (13), senior post Margaret Wimbish (13), and freshman guard Chelsi Thrailkill (11) - totaled double figure points for the Pioneers. Thrailkill, whose point total was a season high, was especially effective for TWU. The former Denton High Bronco made two three-point baskets and scored eight of her points in the second half when TWU pulled away.
“Chelsi had an outstanding game for us tonight,” said TWU head coach Rene Hanebutt. “She came into the game in the second half and really gave us a lift both offensively and defensively. No question about, her play was a major factor in this win.”
Junior forward Brittni Burks led MSU with 16 points in the loss. Senior guard Sonya Calhoun-Courtney also contributed 12 points to the Mustangs cause.
Next up for TWU will be another LSC South matchup on Saturday, February 17, when they travel to Stephenville, Texas to take on the Tarleton State TexAnns in a 7:00 p.m. game.
