TWU TURNED AWAY BY WTAMU 89-72
CANYON, Texas (Feb. 10) – Sophomore guard Emily Brister scored 28 points to lead the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs to a 89-72 win over the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers on Saturday night in Canyon, Texas.
Brister’s big night helped the Lady Buffs to their eighth straight victory and their second win of the season over the Pioneers (WTAMU topped TWU 62-51 on Feb. 3 in Denton). The Amarillo, Texas native earned the bulk of her points from long distance, as she connected on 5-of-8 shots from behind the three-point line. She also was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw stripe in the game.
WTAMU used an 8-0 run in the opening two and a half minutes of the game to jump out to a 10-2 lead that they would not relinquish. Brister had 17 of her points by halftime as the Lady Buffs took a 45-32 lead into the locker room.
TWU closed to within ten points, 48-38, in the early stages of the second half. The Buffs answered, however, going an 18-7 push to extend their margin to 69-48 with just ten minutes left to play. TWU could not respond, and WTAMU cruised down the stretch to their 30 th consecutive home victory.
Three players – freshman post Chelsea Cook, senior post Margaret Wimbish, and freshman guard Jessica Durr – scored 12 points apiece in the loss for TWU. Sophomore guard Maggy Deweber and freshman post Taja Guerin chipped in for the Pioneers with ten points each. Durr (pictured) also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for TWU.
With the win, WTAMU improves to 21-3 on the season and 9-0 in Lone Star Conference South play. The loss by the Pioneers drops their record to 10-13 on the year and 4-6 in LSC South action.
TWU will look to bounce back next Wednesday, February 14, when they host conference foe Midwestern State University at 7 p.m. in Magee Arena.
