TWU TOPS SWOSU 62-49

DENTON, Texas (Jan. 6)  A balanced offensive effort carried the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers to a 62-49 win over the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon in Denton.

Senior post Margaret Wimbish was the Pioneers high scorer in the game with 18 points. Wimbish, however, received plenty of offensive support from her teammates. Freshman forward Taja Guerin chipped in with 10 points, freshman guard Jessica Durr contributed 9, freshman post Chelsea Cook added 8, and junior post Jennifer Schilb totaled 7.

TWU started the game strong, jumping out to a 21-11 lead midway through the first half. SWOSU would battle back, going on an 8-0 run to pull to within two points, 21-19, with 7:46 to play in the opening twenty minutes.

TWU answered the Bulldogs surge with 14-4 push of their own and the Pioneers took a 35-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, TWU would continue to play well. Schilb, who began the afternoon averaging just one point a game this season, came off the bench midway through the half to and scored all 7 of her points to help keep SWOSU at bay. The Pioneers lead ballooned to fourteen points, 51-37, with 9:36 to play in the game, and, because of the comfortable margin, the home team was able to cruise down the stretch to the victory.

Junior guard Trenice Hines scored 17 points to pace SWOSU offensively in the loss. Senior center Andrea Oldham added 11 points for the Bulldogs.

With the win, the Pioneers improved their record to 8-6 on the season. The loss drops the Bulldogs mark to 5-8 for the year.

Next up on the Pioneers schedule will be two road games. On Thursday, January 11, TWU will travel to Commerce, Texas to take on the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions at 7:00 p.m. Then, on Wednesday, January 17, the Pioneers will be in Wichita Falls, Texas to meet the Midwestern State University Mustangs in a Lone Star Conference South Division game. TWU will return to their homecourt on Saturday, January 20, to host the Tarleton State TexAnns at 7:00 p.m.
