AGGIES DOWN PIONEERS 61-54
DENTON, Texas (Jan. 4) – Cameron University guard Tiffany Williams scored 19 of her game-high 27 points in the second half to lead the visiting Aggies to a 61-54 win over the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers on Thursday night at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton, Texas.
Williams, a junior from Lawton, Oklahoma, was instrumental in a 19-8 Cameron run midway through the final twenty minutes of play that helped the Aggies turn a 29-23 halftime deficit into a 44-37 lead with just over seven minutes left in regulation. During that stretch, she carried the Cameron offense, scoring 12 points with a dazzling array of drives to the basket and soft jump shots.
TWU had no response for the Cameron surge. The Pioneers, looking frazzled on both ends of court, could only watch as the Aggies extended their advantage to 50-40 with 6:12 to play.
Sensing the game slipping away, Pioneers head coach Rene Hanebutt called several timeouts down the stretch. Hannebut’s strategy helped to settle her team, and TWU fought back to within three points, 52-49, with 2:30 showing on the clock.
Cameron would answer the Pioneers push, however. The Aggies converted seven of their ten free throw attempts in the game’s waning moments to halt the TWU rally. A breakaway layup by senior guard Shantel Whitaker just before the second half buzzer sealed the win for the Aggies.
The victory by Cameron (1-11, 0-0 in the LSC North) was their first of the 2006-07 season after eleven consecutive losses.
The defeat drops the TWU record to 7-6 on the season. The Pioneers remain undefeated, 2-0, in LSC South Division play this year.
A disappointed Hanebutt summed up the unexpected loss by her team following the game.
“It’s real simple,” she said, “Cameron deserved to win and we didn’t. Defensively, we did not work hard enough. Offensively, we did not play with enough patience. I thought our execution the entire night was horrible. When that happens, more often than not you’re going to come up short.”
With 12 points, freshman post player Chelsea Cook was the high scorer in the game for TWU. Senior post Margaret Wimbish chipped in with 8 points for the Pioneers.
TWU will hit the hardwood again on their home court this Saturday, January 6 when they host the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Bulldogs at 2:00 p.m.
