COLD SHOOTING COSTS PIONEERS IN 66-42 LOSS TO ASU
SAN ANGELO, Texas (Jan. 27) – Doomed by a frigid field goal shooting percentage, the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers suffered a 66-42 loss to the Angelo State Rambelles on Saturday night at the Junell Center in San Angelo, Texas.
In the first half of the game, TWU made just 4 of the 33 shots they attempted (12.1%). In the second half, the Pioneers hit just 9 of their 35 shots (25.7%). Collectively, for the game, TWU shot 13 for 68, a 19.1 field goal percentage.
“You’re not going to win too many college basketball games when you make less than 20 percent of your shots. No one could find the basket for us,” said Pioneers head coach Rene Hanebutt. “We missed lay-ups, open three point shots, jumpers in the paint, free throws. When you shoot that poorly, it’s next to impossible to win.”
The Pioneers shooting struggles came on a night when they played a solid game defensively. In the first half, TWU held Angelo State to just 25 points, and trailed by just thirteen, 25-12, at the break. In the second half, however, with TWU still unable to find their shooting eye, the Rambelles were able to extend their lead to a comfortable margin and cruise to the Lone Star Conference South Division victory.
Three players – senior guard Britinee Davis (13), junior forward Kandra Lakey (13), and senior guard Ashley King (12) – scored in double-digits for ASU in the win. Tiffany Hardwell, a freshman forward for the Rambelles, also had a strong night, recording a game-high 10 rebounds.
Freshman forward Chelsea Cook was one of the few bright spots in the loss for TWU, as she totaled 13 points and 9 rebounds in the game.
The win by ASU improves their record to 11-7 overall and 3-3 in Lone Star Conference South play. The loss drops the Pioneers mark to 9-10 on the season and 3-3 in the Lone Star Conference South.
TWU will look to rebound from this defeat on Thursday, February 1, when they host the Eastern New Mexico Zias at 7:00 p.m. in Magee Arena.
