MAXWELL CARRIES ACU TO 73-67 WIN OVER TWU
DENTON, Texas (Jan. 24) – Sophomore center Audrey Maxwell scored 20 points and grabbed 21 rebounds to lead the Abilene Christian University Wildcats to a 73-67 win over the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers in a Lone Star Conference South Division game played at Kitty Magee Arena on Wednesday night.
Maxwell, a local product for ACU who played her high school basketball at Abilene High School, was easily the difference in the game for the Wildcats. Her 21 rebounds (5 offensive and 16 defensive) were a new career high and her 20 points matched the second highest total she has scored in her first two seasons at ACU.
Maxwell’s strong play was just part of a balanced offensive effort that helped the Wildcats hold off TWU. Three other players – sophomore forward Kristee Davidson (11), junior guard Alex Guiton (12) and junior forward Ashlee Barr (13) – scored in double figures for the visiting team.
Despite Maxwell’s brilliance, TWU held the lead for much of the ballgame and was down by just a point, 61-60, with five minutes left to play in regulation. The Pioneers, however, turned the ball over on three of their next four possessions, and ACU capitalized, surging out to a 67-62 advantage with just 2:02 remaining. TWU would send ACU to the foul line in the game’s waning moments in an attempt to come back, but, the Wildcats converted their free throws and kept the Pioneers at bay.
“I thought that rash of turnovers with about 4:00 minutes left in the game was the difference tonight,” said Pioneers head coach Rene Hanebutt. “We didn’t do a good job of rebounding the basketball and our weakside defense was not very good, but, we shot it well and had a chance to win late. Unfortunately, we couldn’t finish the game strong, and that ended up costing us.”
Freshman guard Jessica Durr led TWU in scoring with 11 points. Durr’s starting backcourt partner, junior Brandi Crouch, chipped in with 10 points of her own. Three other Pioneer players – senior post Margaret Wimbish, junior post Jennifer Schilb (pictured), and freshman guard Chelsi Thrailkill – contributed 9 points apiece.
With the win, ACU improves to 12-7 on the season and 3-2 in conference play. The defeat evens the Pioneers overall record at 9-9 and puts their conference mark at 3-2.
TWU will be back in action this Saturday night, January 27, when they travel to San Angelo to take on Angelo State in a 7:00 p.m. road game.
