FORMER TWU BASKETBALL STANDOUTS RECOGNIZED BY LONE STAR CONFERENCE

DENTON, Texas (Jan. 23) Two former Texas Woman’s University basketball players, Peggy Allen-McCoy and Tammy Julch-Williams, and one former coach, Bob Schneider, have been recognized in a compilation of the top 75 men’s and women’s basketball players and coaches from the Lone Star Conference’s first 75 years. LSC officials announced the prestigious list last week as the conference’s year-long 75 th anniversary celebration continues.

The LSC, known to be the oldest collegiate athletic conference in the southwestern United States, is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year with a tribute to its outstanding teams and great sports personalities. An NCAA Division II conference with 15 member institutions in Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas, the LSC was founded on April 25, 1931. The 1931-32 athletic seasons were the first for the league. In October, 75 football standouts were honored by the conference.

The Top 75 basketball listing includes 38 men’s and 20 women’s players along with 17 coaches. Some of the notable names include Eddie Robinson, Guy V. Lewis, Jim Seward, Nick Keith, Pete Harris and James Silas.

The Pioneer basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball teams compete in the LSC. In 1988, TWU was admitted to the Lone Star by a unanimous vote, making it the only single-gender intercollegiate athletics program in the nation in a co-ed athletic conference at that time.

Allen-McCoy and Julch-Williams, both members of the TWU Athletics Hall of Fame, are two of the most highly decorated student-athletes in Pioneer history.

Allen-McCoy was a four-year letter winner (1987-91) for the Pioneers. She is TWU’s all-time scoring leader with 1,783 points. She was a two-time All-LSC first-team selection (1990 and 1991), and was elected as the 1991 LSC Defensive Player of the Year.

Allen-McCoy received many prestigious awards throughout her career. She was named to the Kodak Women's All-District Basketball Team in 1990, and was a Kodak All-America Honorable Mention in 1991. She was one of seven finalists in NCAA Division II for the 1991 Champion USA/WBCA Player of the Year, an award given annually to the player selected as the best in her division by members of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.

Julch-Williams played for TWU from 1990-94. She scored 1,644 points (second in school history to only Allen-McCoy) during her Pioneer career. She was also chosen as the 1994 NCAA Division II Woman of the Year for the state of Texas and named to the 1994 GTE Academic All-American first team. For all her work on and off the basketball court, Williams earned the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Award in 1994.

Schneider was the Pioneers’ head basketball coach for three seasons from 1978-81. At TWU, he compiled a career record of 49-48 and led the Pioneers to three straight AIAW state playoff appearances. He would go on to make his mark in the LSC as the head coach of the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs. He coached for 26 years at WTAMU, helping the Lady Buffs capture nine LSC championships and winning 585 games before retiring following the 2006 season.
