PIONEERS PUMMEL TAMUK 72-47

Kingsville, Texas (Dec. 16)  An outstanding all-around effort by forward Savannah Thompson (pictured) led the Texas Woman's University Pioneers to a 72-47 blowout win over the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Javelinas on Saturday night in Kingsville, Texas.

Thompson. a junior from  Dallas, Texas, paced the TWU offense with 20 points in the game. She also grabbed four rebounds, dished out four assists, blocked two shots, and snagged two steals.

The contest, which was the Lone Star Conference South Division opener for both teams, was never close. TWU sophomore guard Maggy Deweber connected on a trio of three-point baskets in the game's opening ten minutes to help the Pioneers jump out to a 29-14 lead. TAMUK could not respond, and, by halftime, the TWU margin had grown to 46-25.

TWU started the second half much like they had ended the first half, scoring the first 12 points after intermission to push their advantage to 58-25. The Javelinas again had no answer, and TWU would cruise to the easy road win. The 25-point margin of victory was the Pioneers' largest of the young season.

Deweber and senior post Margaret Wimbish both finished with 15 points apiece in the game for TWU. Junior guard Brandi Crouch and freshman post Taja Guerin aided the Pioneers cause with 8 points each.

Strong team defense was also a factor in the win for TWU. The Pioneers forced TAMUK into a frigid 26.6% shooting percentage for the night. By contrast, TWU converted 47.4% of their field goal opportunities in the game.

Junior forward Lana Toki was the lone bright spot in the loss for the Javelinas. The transfer from Solano Junior College led TAMUK with 21 points.

Saturday night’s contest was the first of two games in a row for TWU (5-4, 1-0 in the LSC South) against TAMUK (2-7, 0-1 in the LSC South). Next Thursday, December 21, the Pioneers will host the Javelinas at 7:00 p.m. at Kitty Magee Arena in Pioneer Hall.
