PIONEERS SUFFER 74-42 LOSS TO SAVAGE STORM

DURANT, Oklahoma (Dec. 7) The Texas Woman's University Pioneers suffered their worst defeat of the young 2006-07 season on Thursday night, losing 74-42 to the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Savage Storm in Durant, Oklahoma.

In the early stages of the game, TWU looked to be the team headed towards a runaway victory when they jumped out to a quick 8-2 advantage in the first 3:10 of the contest. The Pioneers initial surge of momentum, however, came to a grinding halt when their top player, senior post Margaret Wimbish, picked up her second foul of the night just four minutes into the first half. With Wimbish on the bench, SEOSU swiftly gained control, going on a 20-2 run over the next four minutes of play.

Hampered by poor shooting throughout the night (a 27.4% field goal percentage for the game), TWU could not rally from their early deficit. SEOSU pushed their lead to eighteen points, 38-20, at halftime, and, in the second half, the Pioneers would never threaten.

Eight Savage Storm players scored at least 8 points in the win for SEOSU. Senior forward Lora Loy and junior guard Jessica Hocker led the home team's attack with 10 points apiece.

Freshman post player Chelsea Cook, who paced TWU with 9 points, was one of the few bright spots in the loss for the Pioneers.

"Honestly,  Chelsea is the one player that I felt wanted to compete tonight," stated TWU head coach Rene Hanebutt. "We lacked desire and effort throughout in this game, but Chelsea continued to play with composure and focus. I'll give her all the credit in the world."

A frustrated Hanebutt went on to say that her team also suffered from a severe lack of leadership in the loss.

"We got down early, and no one responded for us. Nobody stepped up and took charge of the team on the court. We have to communicate better and, for that to happen, I need my players to be more assertive and more vocal," she said.

The win by SEOSU (6-1, 0-0 in the LSC North) was their fifth in a row and sixth of the season.

TWU (3-4, 0-0 LSC in the LSC South) will look to bounce back this Saturday, December 9 when they play a road game in Durant, Oklahoma against East Central University. The Pioneers next home game will be on Thursday, December 21, againstTexas A&M-Kingsville at 7:00 p.m in Kitty Magee Arena.
