WIMBISH MATCHES CAREER HIGH IN PIONEERS 80-74 WIN OVER NSU
DENTON, Texas (Dec. 2) – Senior post player Margaret Wimbish (pictured) poured in 33 points to lead the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers to an 80-74 win over the Northeastern State Lady Reds on Saturday afternoon at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton, Texas.
Wimbish, a native of Corpus Christi, Texas, scored 18 points in the first half and 15 in the second half to match her TWU career high for points in a game (originally set in a 63-41 TWU victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville on January 9, 2006).
While the play of Wimbish was the decisive factor in the Pioneers win, she was not a one-woman show. Junior forward Savannah Thompson chipped in with 15 points of her own and the Pioneers starting backcourt of Brandi Crouch (9) and Maggy Deweber (11) combined for 20 total points. Freshman post player Taja Guerin also contributed seven points to the TWU cause.
Overall, the Pioneers benefited from one of their best shooting efforts of the season. TWU shot 52.9% from both the field and the three-point line. Wimbish converted 13 of her 18 field goal attempts, Thompson nailed 5 of her 9 shots, and Crouch connected on 3 of her 4 shots.
TWU broke open what was a close game with a 10-2 run in a span of 2:41 late in the second half. The Pioneers were clinging to a two-point lead at 54-52 after a three-point basket by NSU sophomore guard Lindsey Sams at the 9:39 mark of the half. Two buckets by Wimbish, and a three-point basket each by Deweber and Thompson, extended the TWU margin to ten points at 64-54 with 6:58 to play.
Northeastern State would claw back, pulling to within two points on two separate occasions in the game’s waning moments. TWU, though, snuffed out any hopes of a come from behind win for the visitors with excellent free throw shooting down the stretch. Freshman post Chelsea Cook and Wimbish both hit a pair of free throws in the final two minutes to give TWU a bit of breathing room. Deweber then sealed the win for the Pioneers when she hit a left-hand runner in the lane to push the TWU to 78-72 lead with just 34 seconds remaining in regulation.
TWU head coach Rene Hanebutt was extremely pleased with her team’s overall play in the win.
“Obviously, Marge (Wimbish) played outstanding. But, collectively as a team we played well around her. Our guards, specifically Crouch and Deweber, did an excellent job of distributing the ball and creating offensive opportunities for us. Thompson and Cook stepped up as well, and we got strong play from our bench. I’m very happy with the balanced effort we had today,” said Hanebutt.
Northeastern State (2-4, 0-0 LSC North) was led offensively in the loss by reserve guard Jezzal Quintana’s 19 points. Sams and junior forward Adrienne Barnhill added 11 points each for the Lady Reds.
The Pioneers (3-2, 0-0 LSC South) will now turn their attention to Monday, Dec. 4, when they host the Henderson State University Lady Reddies at 6:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena. This game will be the TWU Student Organization Challenge. At Monday night’s game, the TWU Athletics Department will be holding a Student Organization Challenge. Members of TWU Student Organizations are invited to attend the game wearing a t-shirt representing their organization (all individuals wearing a Student Organization shirt will receive a free popcorn from the TWU concession stand). Upon arriving at the game, student organization members will be asked to sign in at the TWU promotions table under their organization’s name. The Student Organization that has the most members in attendance at the game will receive a cash prize. Additionally, the winning organization will receive a pastry breakfast courtesy of ARAMARK during the upcoming fall semester finals week.
