PIONEERS PICK UP 62-60 EXHIBITION WIN OVER LCU

DENTON, Texas (Nov. 9) - Sophomore guard Maggy Deweber (pictured) scored five points in the final minute of the second half to lead the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers to a come from behind 62-60 win over the Lubbock Christian University Chaps on Thursday night at Kitty Magee Arena.
With TWU trailing 59-57 and just 45 seconds remaining in the game, Deweber sank a three point basket from the right wing to put TWU on top 60-59. Then, after LCU failed to score on their next possession, Deweber knocked down two free throws to extend the TWU lead to three points with 19 seconds left in regulation. A TWU foul put Lubbock Christian forward Talita Aguiar on the free throw line with 8.3 seconds to play. Aguiar made one of her two free throws to pull LCU to within two points. After causing a turnover on the ensuing TWU inbounds pass, LCU had a chance to tie the game. The Chaps, however, could not convert, and TWU held on for the victory.
Deweber’s 15 points led TWU in scoring for the game. Freshman guard Jessica Durr and junior forward Savannah Thompson also played major roles in the Pioneers offense, scoring 11 and 8 points respectively.
Guard Sierra Wilcox was the top offensive player in the loss for LCU. Wilcox sank a trio of three point baskets in the game and led the Chaps with 20 total points. Aguiar and Kim Lloyd added 10 points each to the Lubbock Christian cause.
The game, the season opener for both teams, was an exhibition contest and does not count in the regular season records for either club.
Pioneers head coach Rene Hanebutt felt the win was a good measuring stick for her club.
“LCU played in the NAIA Division I championship game last season. They have a very good team. I was excited to see how we stepped up and raised our level of play late in the game to come out on top. I saw a ton of things that we have to work on, but I am very excited with the positive result in our first game of the season,” she said.
TWU will play one more exhibition game this weekend before beginning their regular season next Friday night. On Sunday, November 12, the Pioneers will host the Oklahoma Flyers at 2:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena. The TWU basketball student-athletes have organized a food drive and will be accepting canned food goods at Sunday’s game. All fans that bring two canned food items to the game on Sunday will receive free admission.
