WIMBISH LEADS PIONEERS TO 75-53 WIN OVER SAU
MAGNOLIA, Arkansas (Nov. 21) - Senior post player Margaret Wimbish scored 28 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead the Texas Woman's University Pioneers to a 75-53 win over the Southern Arkansas University Lady Muleriders on Tuesday night in Magnolia, Arkansas.
Wimbish (pictured at right), who entered the game as the second-leading scorer (20.5 ppg) amongst all Lone Star Conference players, was particularly effective in the second half of play. The Corpus Christi, Texas, native tallied 23 of her points after intermission and spurred the Pioneers to the comfortable road victory.
"Marge was phenomenal to say the least," stated TWU head coach Rene Hanebutt. "She really took control of the game in the second half and set the tone for us. When she plays the way she did tonight, we're tough to beat."
TWU freshman guard Jessica Durr complimented the strong play of Wimbish with 11 points of her own. Sophomore guard Maggy Deweber and junior forward Savannah Thompson each chipped in with 9 points apiece.
Hanebutt was also very excited about the play of her bench in the win.
"Eight players had double-digit minutes for us," she explained. "Every girl that I put on the court played well. To get that kind of contribution off the bench says a lot about the depth we have on this team."
With 17 points, senior guard Brooke Grigsby was the leading scorer in the loss for SAU (0-3). Brooke's twin sister, Beth, added 9 points to the Mulerider's cause
The Pioneers, with a record of 2-1 on the season, will now enjoy an extended break for the Thanksgiving holiday. TWU will not be in action again until Thursday, November 30 when they open the home portion of their 2006-2007 schedule with a 7:00 p.m. game in Kitty Magee Arena at Pioneer Hall against the University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos.
